Retaining Walls

Engineered retaining solutions for slopes, excavations, and subdivision developments across NZ and Australia.

Retaining walls are a critical part of site development, particularly on sloping sections, subdivision projects, and commercial sites where excavation creates level changes. NZ Construction Services builds engineered retaining walls across New Zealand and Australia, using reinforced concrete, concrete block, and cantilever wall systems designed to handle the specific ground and loading conditions on your site.

We work from your engineer's retaining wall design and handle the full construction scope, from excavation and footing preparation through to wall construction, drainage, and backfill. Our crews are experienced with residential retaining walls from 1 metre through to large commercial retaining structures over 5 metres high, including walls requiring building consent and specific engineering sign-off.

Good drainage is essential to the long-term performance of any retaining wall, and we install drainage systems as part of every retaining wall build. Whether your project is a hillside residential section in the Bay of Plenty, a subdivision development in Hamilton, or a commercial excavation in Perth, our teams deliver retaining walls that are built to last.

What We Deliver

  • Reinforced concrete cantilever retaining walls
  • Concrete masonry block retaining walls (filled and reinforced)
  • Gravity retaining walls and crib walls
  • Retaining wall drainage systems including weep holes and ag drains
  • Tiered retaining wall systems for steep sites
  • Building consent coordination for walls over 1.5 metres

Frequently Asked Questions

Do retaining walls need building consent?

In New Zealand, retaining walls over 1.5 metres in height generally require building consent and engineering design. Even walls under 1.5 metres may require consent if they support a surcharge (such as a driveway or building above). We can advise on consent requirements and work with your engineer to ensure your wall meets council requirements.

What type of retaining wall is best for my site?

The best wall type depends on the wall height, ground conditions, surcharge loading, and the available space for construction. Reinforced concrete cantilever walls are common for taller walls, while concrete block walls are often used for walls up to around 3 metres. Your engineer will specify the wall type, and we build to that design.

How important is drainage behind the wall?

Drainage is critical. Water pressure behind a retaining wall is one of the most common causes of wall failure. We install drainage aggregate, filter fabric, and agricultural drain pipe behind every retaining wall we build, with outlets that direct water away from the structure. This is a non-negotiable part of our retaining wall scope.
